World of warships anti aircraft aiming9/16/2023 ![]() Spotter planes were very useful for correcting fire onto stationary targets - e.g., ship-to-shore preparatory fire for amphibious landings. ![]() Putting the fire observer up in the air many kilometers away from the guns adds another layer of complexity and potential source of error to the aim-fire-observe-correct loop. Historically, spotter planes didn't so much make aiming "easier" than it was under the direction of shipboard FCS, as the spotting plane made aiming corrections possible in situations where the ship-mounted FCS couldn't see the target and/or the shell splashes for whatever reason - distance, haze, etc.Īnd historical evidence also suggests that long range BB fire directed by spotter planes was usually not very effective against other moving ships because it was difficult for the airborne spotter to relay accurate correction information quickly and reliably enough via radio.
